Our Mission & Philosophy
Founded on the principle of normalcy and the belief that all people, regardless of the severity of their disability are entitled to live with the same dignity and at the same standard of living that many members of the general population enjoy. The objective of Life Opportunities Unlimited is to develop options and opportunities that support this philosophy and thus, enrich the quality of life of people with developmental disabilities.
“A place that just treats people like people…”
When conceptualizing disability, there are three main models: moral, medical, and social. Many New Jersey providers adhere to a medical model, which views disability as an impairment in a body system that is inherently pathological. In this case, a treatment is sought after and the individual’s adjustment and behavioral change is perceived as a “cure.” As a result, many excessive behavioral and nursing services are rendered to individuals.
At LOU, we adhere to a social model view on disability, a model in which we focus on the systemic barriers facing the individual and focus on environmental and attitudinal changes to make all aspects of society accessible. We are committed to changing society, not the individual.
